"Labor Day"

12 x 12"
oil on masonite

I said I was going to take a few days off but today's been a perfect, mellow, end-of-the-summer day. A good day for painting. I enjoyed the free-hand piece so much yesterday, that I did another, staying as loose as possible. After all, it's a day at the beach. Real people, real life. Enjoy your holiday.

This scene is from South Beach, Miami.

Hi, Karen. love your paintings. What do you mean when you refer to them as freehand? Aren't they all?
happy holiday.

I guess my version of free-hand is no sketching out. With the larger work, I feel I have to draw the general shapes before I paint - to get it right. It depends on the complexity whether I do that or not. These two latest pieces are done with a large, wide, flat brush - starting with a few outlines of weak color to guide me - and just moving fast without a plan.

Truly awesome! Thanks for the explanation.

Hi Karen,

I've been following your painting blog for a while now and really do love your work. Your color and value sense is amazing and makes your works sparkle with life. Your success story is an inspiration to many I'm sure, including myself, so thanks for taking the plunge! I've recently begun painting with oils after having worked for years with watercolor and especially pastels. I'm having trouble photographing the blasted things though! I'm a photographer, so this is especially frustrating, ;o)) You've shared so much helpful information here, and I hope you might take a few minutes to explain how you get such nice photos of your work. Thanks! Cheryl
