"100 Faces, No. 85"

4 x 4"

Atlanta is officially shut down - it's the most beautiful snow day if you're home safe and sound.

This is one of my personal favorites. Again, the mustard tones with reds ...... love that.

Finding the mustard in his facial tones is especially effective I think. His eyes are marvelous.

Karin - great highlights on this face. And his eyes, as they look downward, are wonderful!

Yes, the eyes have it. This series of faces is wonderful, to be sure, but this one prompted me to go back to look specifically at the eyes. It's in them that you accomplish the portrait. For me, it's all about the moment frozen by them.

Lovely, very expressive brush strokes.

Can you give some insight as to why you pick a particular background color?

Thanks!

Laurie

You've probably answered this a million times, forgive me - but are you googling mugshots or do you have a favorite site of them? - I know you said you get them from all over - but wondering what your process is for finding the reference.

Laurie's question about how I pick a background color - I don't. I paint dozens of boards different colors and randomly pick one and start the painting. Planning isn't part of the exercise - working with what I got is the learning experience.

Lisa's question about where I find mugshots - I google 'mugshots'.
