"Fully Booked"

6 x 6"
oil on masonite
sold

Part of my series ATL to NYC & Back - it was Monday morning, my first day teaching a workshop. Brett helped me set up and went on his way with his camera while I did my thing. This gentleman was spotted reading a good book on a stoop of a brownstone, somewhere in the Upper East Side of the city.

I like the perspective you used. It really makes for a very interesting painting. Love it!

I think this is one of the first paintings I've seen of yours that you really don't push the lighting and make it warmer and stronger than it is. This one really gives me a lot to chew on, because you can tell that it is kind of an overcast day without many strong shadows, yet you make sure that things do not wind up being flat (which is something I struggle with during our numerous overcast days).

I do see that you pushed the highlights and shadows on the clothing, but left the rest much softer. Do you think this would have worked with that lighting if you hadn't had such a strong perspective angle on the wall? I'm not sure it would have, that it needed that design element. Thank you for giving me so much to think about!
