"Light"

Van Gogh said "I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day", a quote that inspired this new painting in my alphabet series. After all, light is what gives us the drama and the color in painting. In this scene, there's several sources of light - the blueish, morning light streaming down the staircase and the wall - the lone porchlamp illuminating the front door - and the sliver of a warm, golden glow behind the curtains.

This scene is from a pre-dawn stroll in the little city of Savannah, Georgia.

lovely interpretation of the different lights :) and so small yet it doesn't look it :)

Very nice as always. Love all the brush strokes I always see in your paintings. So that's what the light looks light early in the morning? Don't know if I'll ever see it, I try hard not to be out of bed that early, lol. Barb

Hi Karin,
I love how this picture is alive with light. There is no doubt that it is night, yet every detail is illuminated with the subtle yet rich tones of color you have chosen. For me, this is definitely a favorite of yours!

Your painting captures the cool humidity of the early mornings in Savanah. My wife got her masters from SCAD and lived there for quite a while.

I use to live in Savannah, and my first thought on seeing this painting was, "wow, that looks like Savannah." I was quite surprised to see that it is. Not only did you do a nice job of capturing the light, you also captured the place. Good job.

Another remarkable painting, Karin. I was speechless when I first saw it, and still am. Stunning!

Very nice. The blue reflections from the night's sky are well done.

Karin, I am the Bill from the above comment. Not sure why it put that link to nowhere, rather than my regular account. Anyway. The painting is great.

Love it! I agree with Vivien that this one looks "big". Also love the brushstrokes and the cool vs warm going on. Bravo!

I've been wanting to do a nocturne for a while but haven't had the guts. I totally agree with the quote too. There is some lovely color at the edges of the day and you've certainly captured it!
