"Sole Man"

You haven't seen much action from me recently - due to my diligent efforts to paint two pieces for the Charleston Art Auction, which takes place in early November. I went through several tries before I got it right. Pretty frustrating. Nevertheless, they're done and I'm thrilled with both. You'll see them closer to the auction date.

It was nice to pick up a small panel and loosen up with this new painting - from the Delaware Museum of Art, where a patron stands before one of my favorite paintings by Howard Pyle titled 'Marooned Pirate', a fairly simple scene yet profoundly beautiful.

Also from the Delaware Art Museum, a woman hones in on a tiny etching. I think you'll find anyone who views this painting will be doing the exact same thing.

"Little Women"

I've had nothing but frustrating days with my paints - so I've decided to put my ambitions of doing larger work aside, for a while, and do some small pieces.

"Blue Barn"

4 x 4"

I've got this road trip coming up - and I'm antsy. It may even be delayed. Sunshine is my friend when it comes to driving and photography. While I'm waiting on the right day to shove off, I thought I'd start a series of little road trip paintings - places I've seen in my past travels. This little blue-roofed barn was along Hwy 404, in the state of Delaware.

"Redneck Riviera"

Right now, the thought of relaxing on the beach sounds pretty good. Of course, when I'm on a beach, I'm a non-stop camera bug - so interested in us, the people, and how we set up our spots, group together or prefer alone time. This new painting is a familiar site on a public beach - a family sprawled out, forming shapes of color and light. I just love it.

Please click here for a larger view. This painting is included in my current solo show, now on the walls of the Morris & Whiteside Galleries on Hilton Head Island. The reception is this Friday evening - so pack you bags and come to the beach.

"Borderline"

6 x 6"

I feel like I've been painting too tight lately. It's tension I suppose. So this morning, I vowed to keep it looser, more painterly. This is a good scene to tackle - not wanting to paint every stick or every blade of grass - I started it much different than the usual. And just when I thought I'd wipe it all off and start over, it started to work.

"Four O Four"

The upcoming group show at 16 Patton is all about landscapes - which does push me to paint what I normally don't on a larger scale. And I do think all of those little daily paintings of houses and more rural scenes prepared me for doing a better job here. Please come see it at the gallery in the fall months - it's a sweet painting in person.

From the Delaware countryside, off US Hwy 404, someone's little slice of heaven.

Also a soothing subject to paint - the quiet and still moments in the night. A row of beach cottages - one household seemingly asleep but with the porch light on for a late arrival - the other with an upstairs guest still up, maybe with a good book.

"Mellow"

10 x 8"

I'm gonna tell you, painting this was my moment of Zen. Getting ready for my trip to Seattle this week - framing and packaging and shipping over 15 paintings - finding something to wear that doesn't have paint on it - I was in great need of mellowing out, not even thinking this would be perfect for the letter M in my alphabet series. It's a bit larger than the usual, 8 x 10", I wanted more empty area around her.

An additional note....... the entire body of work, for my show opening this coming Saturday night, can now be viewed on my website and on YouTube. Hope you enjoy them.
