"Billows"

5 x 10"
oil on masonite

In the midst of working on the show pieces - I stopped and painted this smoke stack. My moment of Zen. I traveled to Asheville last week, a quick trip to drop off new paintings at the 16 Patton Gallery - always a pleasant ride. About 10 miles south of the city, this stunning, strong smoke stack appears above the tree line and it always compels a wow out of my mouth. This billowing, colorful, stormy tower of smoke just floors me every time. And today I had to paint it.

I have to agree with Carol. I would have never seen this painting to begin with yet it looks so good.

Who would have thought that a smoke stack could make a pretty picture... yet it does.
Interesting subject choice, and well executed.

Karin, I see this every weekend as my husband and I spend the weekends in Asheville where we relax and I paint. When I saw this painting, I was so impressed that you made this site so peaceful and so beautiful. What an impressive painting.

Another WOW. You certainly know how to choose different subjects and make them look incredible.

I'm with the others - my first thought was "a smoke stack!". But it looks amazing.

I have been staring at this. Karin... you are amazing. I wish I knew what kind of oil you mix with. Refined linseed oil? The white looks so white and not yellowed. Sooo great.

Loving this painting and your blog in general! Stumbled on it and I've been pawing through it. I really want to start painting with the fantastic broad loose style you use. The only thing stopping me is having enough paint, hehe.
Anyway, I'm finding your work a great inspiration- thanks!

It must have been so satisfying to paint something that you have found compelling for so long. I can see your distinct interest in the subject; you've found its beauty and conveyed that to the rest of the world. Very inspiring.

Karin,

This is what I admire about your paintings. Finding the ordinary and painting it with such interest. I always feel like I participated in your paintings. Which is what I am striving for in my paintings.
