"A Grey Area" (revised)

After a good night's sleep and several cups of coffee, I was compelled to change a few things on the most recent painting. Oddly, it's something that I rarely do - but I've learned that when I take a fresh look, if there's something that pops into my head right away, I have to address it. In this case, I thought it lacked warmth. Perhaps I was carried away with the multitudes of greys, which I seem to love experimenting with - still, I'm much happier with the painting now. Time to move on.

The right thing to do...I like it much better. I find myself doing that...step back and get a fresh look the next day or a few days later... and sometimes that is just what is needed. Good job, as always, Karen.

I love the warming up that you did with the painting and I thank you for sharing with us as it's wonderful to be able to look at both images. I have to wonder how much figure drawing you have done over the years because the anatomy on your figures always looks so good - so natural - not at all forced.

I have to jump in and comment on what artbymj said - as a kid, I compulsively copied the figures off my mom's sewing pattern packages. How weird is that? As a teenager, I compulsively drew people in bus stations or my own classroom or in the Art Institute. I couldn't get enough of it. I wanted to be a courtroom sketch artist when I grew up. Then I grew up and worked in the real world. Years passed and all of that compulsion paid off - as if I never stopped. It takes a lot of practice to know the figure - and I thank you for the comment.

You're right. It's hard to see what you changed but the second one pops and the first one kind of sits there...interesting, enjoyable but missing something compared to the second.
