"Welcome Mat"

It is an afternoon of Zen painting a quiet, remote house.  Find peace whenever you can right?

Early evening outside of Sterling, Colorado.

"Looming"

4 x 4"
oil on panel
sold

Took a breather from a larger painting to do a little house, one of my favorite subjects.  I spotted this little homestead outside of Sterling, Colorado on a road trip - with ominous skies looming in the distance.

It pretty much expresses how I feel these days.

"Lincoln Highway/Grand Island Bungalow, Nebraska"

5 x 7"

I fully intended to stay much looser on this and got carried away a bit.  I just love little houses - this one spotted as we drove through Grand Island, Nebraska on the Highway 30.

A new addition to my series The Lincoln Highway.

"Toledo" and a New Blog

6 x 6"
oil on panel
sold

After reminiscing about our cross-country road trip last spring, browsing through the photos of the stretch on the Lincoln Highway through Iowa, I picked this little, sunlit homestead we spotted in a little town called Toledo.  I have this deep affection for little houses.

And.... I started a new blog called Karin Jurick Paints - a little insight to my approach to painting.  'Toledo' is my first post - please check it out if you're interested in the process.

"Fifty Shades of Green"

8 x 8"
oil on masonite
sold

How could I resist this title - I looked at my palette and said out loud that I must have mixed 50 shades of green.  I'm so happy with this painting, it must be this personal love for old, little houses.  I spotted this one somewhere along the Lincoln Highway in Nebraska.

A larger view can be found here.

"A Simple Life"

6 x 6"

Adding to my new series from a recent cross-country road trip - a plain, unadorned homestead in west Texas, along Highway 40.  I marvel at little houses like this one, plunked on the edge of an interstate, baking in the hot sun.  I love the somewhat-abstract surroundings and I especially love the see-thru from the front window to the back yard.  So simple.  So cool.

"Bloomfield"

6 x 6"
oil on masonite
sold

I'm almost at the end of my series ATL to NYC & Back - and I just painted one of my personal favorites. I love it when that happens.

This is quintessential Bloomfield, New Jersey - little grandma houses in old neighborhoods. I love those old homes. We met up with our car, which was parked for free while we were in New York City, said thanks to a good friend, and we were soon on our way.

Even a dismal day can inspire a painting. The second in my new series ATL to NYC & Back - an old mill house we spotted along the Lincoln Highway in Pennsylvania.

"Sugar-Coated"

I am sure there's many of you out there that aren't embracing the snow right now. But remember, I live in the deep south, and this is not only a rare occurrence, it's an unusual opportunity for me to paint something different, and I love that. It is staggering to see my world blanketed in white - almost no hint of color anywhere - the muted, silver sky - the amazing quiet. If it wasn't for my slipping on the ice and dropping my camera right smack in the snow, I would say that day was a perfect day.

I also get to play with thick, blended, warm and cool white paints - laid on thick and as heavy as the snow itself. So much fun. And I promise - the 18 new paintings you'll see in a few weeks will warm you up and remind you that brighter days are ahead.

"Four O Four"

16 x 8"
oil on masonite
sold

The upcoming group show at 16 Patton is all about landscapes - which does push me to paint what I normally don't on a larger scale. And I do think all of those little daily paintings of houses and more rural scenes prepared me for doing a better job here. Please come see it at the gallery in the fall months - it's a sweet painting in person.

From the Delaware countryside, off US Hwy 404, someone's little slice of heaven.

"Somebody's Up"

6 x 6"

Also a soothing subject to paint - the quiet and still moments in the night. A row of beach cottages - one household seemingly asleep but with the porch light on for a late arrival - the other with an upstairs guest still up, maybe with a good book.

From Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

"Wired"

6 x 6"

Forgive the lapse in painting - I took a break and actually had some holiday fun, then caught a bad cold. That's what I get. I'd like to think that wouldn't stop me from working, but it resulted in a mess. The brain just didn't work. Slowing climbing out of it - good enough to enjoy painting this little, white, grandma house - which is right around the corner from where I live. Whether it's the morning or evening sun hitting the stark white, it always captures my attention. Especially set in front of the huge wall of dark trees, my eyes (going 45 mph) get a fast glimpse of whites, blues, greens and multitudes of wires.

"Cricket Hour"

6 x 6"
oil on masonite
sold

This is one of my favorite subjects to paint small. Someone's home tucked into their own little world. This little Georgia house was nestled in the hardwoods - with the heavy, hazy, evening sky above. It's that time of day when the relief from the hot sun starts to set in and the crickets take over the quiet. It's quintessential Georgia in the summertime.

also...... I have new copies of all five volumes of my 'painting a day' books reordered, including a new book of my alphabet series - they should arrive by the end of the week. As soon as they land here, I'll make them available.

"June"

6 x 6"

Getting back to my alphabet series, I chose to paint this old, shotgun house that I spotted around Atlanta - with the hot, summer sun bathing it with color and light. I love this painting.

If you read the last post, I was struggling with one last piece for the February show. I ended up painting a scene that I honestly thought I'd never be able to pull off - and it turned out to be one of my all-time, personal favorites. I am beaming. I'll be able to show it to you in a couple of weeks, when I reveal all the work.

"Hopper House"

6 x 6"

oil on masonite

Back to work on my alphabet series - H for a Hopper(esque) House, inspired by a Christmas gift, a book of Edward Hopper's work. I enjoyed painting this piece so much that I'm thinking of doing a series for my upcoming show - which leads me to a request for some feedback, if you feel compelled to do so. I'm thinking of zooming in a little more on the house .... I'm not sure. Give me your thoughts?

"The Perfect Place"

5 x 7"

oil on masonite

sold

We all have an idea of our dream home - I tend to have more than a dozen - but when I spotted this farmhouse, I immediately thought this is the perfect place. Tucked back off a small road that came off of several small roads, this slice of heaven sat quiet and cozy. It was surrounded by hardwoods and ponds and outbuildings that would make the ideal studio. Oh......I was dreaming alright.
