"Tough Love"

6 x 8"
oil on panel
sold

This marble sculpture by Horatio Greenough, Love Prisoner to Wisdom, is one of my very favorites in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Essentially, the owl behind the chained Cupid symbolizes wisdom.  So.... prudence is restraining reckless love.  Think before you jump in.  The woman viewing the sculpture is seemingly pondering the message.

"One For The Books"

12 x 12"
oil on masonite
sold

It's time for me to plug my new paintings - now on exhibit at the Howard/Mandville Gallery in Kirkland, right outside of Seattle. The opening is this Saturday night, please come by and see it all in person. Try as I might to get a great image on the web, it doesn't compare to seeing the real thing. I also have a new video on YouTube, featuring all the work, accompanied by some happy music by Dean Martin.

As you might know, I love to paint people reading and when I really lose my mind, I paint people browsing in bookstores. Quite the challenge. This was taken from the gift shop in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

"Deep Subject"

8 x 10"
oil on masonite
sold

Geezlois ...... it's been one of those weeks. Vet appointments for Petey have come down to a decision to proceed with chemo or take a wait-and-see approach if a new tumor develops. We opted for the latter after a positive check-up today - hoping he's got some good years ahead. Thanks to all for your kind emails - our pets are so dear to us and it's nice to hear from others.

I'm also heading out of town - partly for a big celebration of my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary - what a beautiful thing to be married and happy for so many many years. Hoping to take photos around Washington DC, in between the festivities.

I also spent an afternoon at a huge dog show - which means I'll be painting a new series like the "Dogs Rule" that I did last summer. Surely one of my favorite subjects to paint.

This new piece is a scene from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston - with the dramatic painting by John Singleton Copley titled 'Watson and the Shark' behind the group of girls who were all writing their paper on the same deep subject.

I do like to keep my gallery paintings fresh and from time to time I'll pull something out and replace it with a piece more recently done. These three are available for a direct purchase, thru eBay and Paypal, if you are interested.

Saturday update - the three paintings have sold. Thank you so much for your consideration.

"A Grey Area" (revised)

9 x 12"

oil on masonite

sold

After a good night's sleep and several cups of coffee, I was compelled to change a few things on the most recent painting. Oddly, it's something that I rarely do - but I've learned that when I take a fresh look, if there's something that pops into my head right away, I have to address it. In this case, I thought it lacked warmth. Perhaps I was carried away with the multitudes of greys, which I seem to love experimenting with - still, I'm much happier with the painting now. Time to move on.

"Boston Books"

11 x 14"
oil on masonite
sold

I've kindof gotten lost in this latest painting - when I started it yesterday morning, I thought I must be nuts. All those books.......yikes. It's also one of those paintings where it's hard not to be too 'illustrative'. It's always on my mind to stay loose - get the point done with three brush strokes rather than ten. It's nice to end this day with a finished piece of work that I really am proud of.

Enjoy the weekend wherever you are.

"An Undertaking"

12 x 9"

oil on masonite

The painting on the left of the young lady is "The Wrestlers", by George Luks - certainly one of my top-5 favorites in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It is hung in a small, warm room and faces you dead-on when you walk into the space. It's absolutely breathtaking. The painting the young lady is writing about, the portrait before her, is Robert Henri's "The Irish Girl". I had to wonder why she chose the one over the other for her essay, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

This painting can be bought directly from me.

"Following a Lead"

9 x 12"

oil on masonite

sold

I feel like I'm finally coming out of a fog - getting over the flu and watching my dog recoop from surgery. I've lost time in painting and need to catch up with some new gallery pieces, so the small ones may have to wait a little while.

This young woman was viewing the very famous Renoir painting "Dance at Bougival", which hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It is a truly marvelous work of art in person.

"Bookies"

8 x 16"

oil on masonite

sold

I mentioned that I was working on a larger piece with the same woman as in the small painting "Rummaging" - thought you'd like to see it as well. It was done for my upcoming gallery show. It may be hard to see, but I had a lot of fun with the book covers in the foreground.

"Rummaging"

6 x 6"

oil on masonite

sold

I've been working on a painting, a bit larger, which includes this woman. I loved painting her. So much so, I put down the other piece and painted her again. I think it's the way her profile is so beautifully placed in front of the cool grey, or the light just barely hitting her hair and her hand. It's also nice to loosen up a bit more - the way I love to paint.

A quick note - I'm working hard on gallery paintings for my February show, so I thought I'd extend the auction to ten days, rather than seven. Also keeping in mind the auction will end before my favorite show comes on because I know I'm not the only 24 fan out there.

"Vested Interest"

6 x 6"

oil on masonite

sold

There's something about this woman that I really like. I want to paint her in a couple of poses. She was alone in the museum, seriously studying every piece of art. I love watching people really soak up the paintings and she certainly was. Behind her is an Edvard Munch painting - a lone figure of a woman as well. This scene was taken from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
