"A Sit Down"

5 x 7"

(detail)

A weary museum patron resting on a bench - perfect subject for figurative painting. I especially love the muted tones - the gray-purples, soft browns, touches of gold and pink and aquas from the cool light. It feels quiet.

"Greetings From Union Station"

6 x 6"
oil on masonite

If you commute thru Union Station, in Washington DC, you might see this little guy at the top of the escalator. He waits, with great anticipation, for his dad at the end of every workday. How cool is that? This little piece was been donated to a fund-raising event, with the winning bid of $500.

I've been working hard on several pieces - honestly I've had several flops this week. It comes with the territory. Certainly more to show tomorrow.

"A Tunic and a Tuna"

8 x 10"

This scene is from the American Art Wing in the Art Institute - a gallery that has a bit more dimmed lighting overall, and strong spotlighting on the art and it's personal space. It does make for a striking visual, especially accenting the woman's grey hair and the patterns on her long blouse. I really like the overall feel of this piece.

"Bling"

I love the woman's white coat - surrounded by the golds and greys especially. The painting before her is Rembrandt's "Old Man With a Gold Chain", which hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago.

"Morning Market"

6 x 6"

This may be a little odd for me - to leave out surroundings altogether but, visually speaking, the morning green market was filled with bright, blinding light - and that is what made me notice this woman most of all. So I chose to "spotlight" her, in my own way.

"Bare Back"

6 x 6"

Of all the hundreds of photographs I came home with - some stand out immediately and I'm anxious to paint those first. This young lady is one of those. There is an awkward elegance about her, mostly, it's the strong light on her bare back that is striking to me.
