"200 Faces, No. 129"

6 x 6"
oil on panel
sold

A new addition to my ongoing series BUST-ED, paintings inspired from mugshots.

I honestly did not think I could pull off the hair on this young man, which is why I considered this portrait a big challenge.  It took some patience and experimenting with old brushes and a palette knife.  I love the end result, which is more evident in the real painting than the image - it has some wonderful texture.

Staying loose and keeping limber with a new addition to my ongoing series BUST-ED.  Painted on a turquoise ground color.

"200 Faces, No. 126"

4 x 4"
oil on panel
sold

A new addition to my ongoing series BUST-ED.

Again, I painted on a pink/orange ground.  Around the forehead I washed on tones and as I moved down the layers became a bit thicker with oils.  Just moving the paint around in different ways to feel out the results.

I haven't painted in a few days, I've been building an ark.  If you live in the southeast, you'll understand.   And I needed some warming up, adding a new portrait to my ongoing series BUST-ED.

"200 Faces, No. 118"

6 x 6"
oil on panel
sold

A new addition to my ongoing series BUST-ED, and slightly larger than the usual 4" square - this particular face persuaded me to try something different.  I painted a brown/black (oil) over the white ground and proceeded to bring out the highlights by removing the dark with my brush dipped in Gamsol.  It took a while to get used to how to use the brush, wet, dry, scrubbed, washed, etc.  Tricky.
Near the completion, I added a slight warm-grey into areas as well.  I love it.

Catching Up

Thanksgiving's a few days away and I'm psyched for the way the kitchen smells when the turkey's roasting and eating my weight in sweet potato casserole.

I've spent the past weeks finishing up the new work for a dual show in December with Ken Auster - and I've put my paints away for a short while to simply enjoy the holiday week.  Before I get busy in the kitchen, I wanted to post the paintings I did at the recent workshop - a demo and sometimes two every day - which I try to include a variety of subjects.

Starting with Monday's demo, which I share the original reference photo and the students paint their versions the following day .....

My next workshop is in New York City, held at the National Academy on 5th Avenue - an amazing place to paint, a goldmine of imagery to capture.  The date is next May, the Tuesday after Memorial Day - and Sedona Arts Center is who you want to contact if you're interested in signing up.  The details are on the right-side column of this blog.

Another reminder that Brett has brand-new Tabletop Easels available as well as brand-new AlterEasels --- now there's a perfect gift for an artist if someone needs a hint.

And I'll be back to painting next weekend, meanwhile ~
wishing you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving
