"Time For Church"

6 x 8"
oil on panel
sold

I was lucky to have seen an exhibit last year - at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art - featuring many of Georgia O'Keeffe's works.  Yes, several close-up flowers that are so familiar were there to please the masses but I'm more enamored with her buildings in New Mexico and New York City, including Cebolla Church.

O'Keeffe lived in the same county in New Mexico and often passed through the small village of Cebolla.  Her painting is of the Church of Santo Nino, a stark, simplistic adobe building - but with a pitched roof unlike the typical flat-roofed adobe structures mainly because Cebolla gets more snow in the winter than the lower areas of the state.

"Belfry"

6 x 8"
oil on panel
sold

Now I know it's not nice to stare but I have this thing about fabrics.  Especially patterned, colorful fabrics.  I followed this woman around the galleries - enamored by her sari and layers of different jewel-toned wraps.  She reminded me of how elegant Georgia O'Keeffe was in her later years.

From the Art Institute of Chicago, a woman stands besides O'Keeffe's Church Steeple, 1930.  The painting belongs to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

"Emanuel A.M.E. at Dawn"

5 x 7"
oil on panel
sold

Before I began heading home early in the morning, on my last visit to the beautiful city of Charleston,  I pulled over to look at the colorful, glowing sky and the church steeple of Emanuel A.M.E..

I suppose I painted this peaceful moment to make myself feel better.

"Chapel at Palmetto Bluff"

7 x 9"
oil on panel

The ride to Palmetto Bluff, near Hilton Head Island, feels like you're in a movie.  It's a quiet, long road to the little town, which is picture-perfect.  Very sweet.  This is the Chapel at Palmetto Bluff, a very desirable place to have a wedding I'm told.  Through those windows you look out onto the May River.  It's lovely.  All of it.

"Spirit In The Sky"

5 x 7"
oil on masonite
sold

This new painting will be added to the Sylvan Gallery in Charleston - along with several more I'm currently working on. They're small, casual, intimate scenes - much like the Holy City itself. This view is looking down Meeting Street towards St. Michael's Church, lit up in the early morning sun.

"St. Philip's"

4 x 12"
oil on masonite
sold

The St. Philip's Church, in Charleston, is a thing of beauty, resembling a tiered wedding cake reaching into the sky. Established in 1680, there's incredible history to this building - surviving through 300+ years and several hurricanes and tornados.

This is taken from an early evening stroll, with the warm, summer sun bathing onto the earthy brick.

"Charleston Dusk"

5 x 7"
oil on masonite
sold

Maybe it was the big breakfast. Maybe the five cups of coffee. I had the most productive, wonderful day of painting today. Not one, not two, but three paintings were done. And they're all loose, expressive and yummy. I cannot show you the other two yet - they're gifts. This is one of those days when I finish up, thinking this is what oils are meant for. I love that. While I'm on the subject - I recently tried out a brand I hadn't bought before - Williamsburg oil paints. They're wonderful. I want to be their spokeswoman.

This little piece is a street in the charming city of Charleston, South Carolina. The city of steeples.

"Rest Stop"

8 x 5"
oil on masonite

Painting this was an afternoon of Zen. Tiny brushes and anal details in parts, swoops of color in other parts. Oh I wish you could see it in person. This little church and cemetery was in the countryside of Delaware.

With some (lately rare) time to paint today, I just had to try a little one of this pretty, little church lady.
