"Bored Certified"

8 x 10"
oil on panel
sold

As you may know, I will have a small solo show titled 'Museum Hours', opening February 28th at the Anne Irwin Fine Art Gallery here in Atlanta.  I got the okay to begin revealing the paintings, starting with this new piece, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York City - a mother viewing Pablo Picasso's 'Girl Before a Mirror' while her seemingly bored daughter sits beside her.

"Bare Market"

11 x 11"
oil on panel
sold

I spent all weekend and today on a couple of paintings that had a deadline date - including this new piece that may be included in the Hilton Head Auction in November, unless it sells before.  I wouldn't argue that.

Inside the Museum of Modern Art in New York City - women admire Picasso's masterpiece 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon'.   In case you didn't know, his title is a reference to a street in Barcelona famous for its brothel.

This is a smaller painting I am donating to a charity auction taking place in Connecticut in October.

Now I move on to more Chicago scenes and a start on an upcoming solo show in Atlanta sometime in November.

"Lean To"

7-1/2 x 14"
oil on masonite
sold

Oh my...... this was a tough one, unexpectedly so. To paint a Picasso should be fairly easy, but not 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon'. It's a complex, colorful, geometric masterpiece. Very fun, hard, but very fun.

"Below the Belt"

12 x 12"
sold

I may have said this before - when I'm in a museum, I find myself so focused on looking at people rather than the art. It's been an obsession since I was a kid - watching the human figure and studying how we move, stand, balance, sit ...... all of it. And when I start a painting, there's always something that stands out right away - a feature that is essentially why I'm interested in the photograph in the first place. In this case, I saw this gentleman and his clothes as one united, interesting form - I felt the weight of the fabric, the heavy load of the backpack and especially the zigzags created by the folds of the pants. I just love that feature.

I also saw the warmth of the overall tones - the golds, reds, greys - and chose to paint a rich, paprika-like color on top of the black surface I usually start with and hoped it would peek through in parts as long as I didn't go too far and cover it all up. The challenge being to let the edges do what they do, without nit picking. Like here in the legs .....

I was so happy with the some of the red showing through the creamy wall and the looseness of the shadows around the Picasso - again allowing edges to overlap and disappear into each other. That's what I get when I stay away from small brushes - I'm forced to take more control of the strokes but I can't over-paint it.

This young man was studying Picasso's 'Mother and Child', which hangs in the Modern Wing in the Art Institute of Chicago.

"Big Boned"

I remember this woman - she towered over me. She had quite a presence, much like the figures in Picasso's 'Three Women at the Spring, Fontainebleau', which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York.

"Blues Brothers"

9 x 12"

I'm back in the game. My week was odd ~ two appliances broke as if it were a sign to stay home, but I managed to get away and headed to Alabama for a long drive. Can't say I captured some stellar images, but it was good just to leave the state of Georgia, if only for a day. I forced myself to take time off of both my frame shop and painting - which felt weird but very nice. One of those days was so cozy - an all-day rain - and I ended up painting this piece in my pj's.

"On The Map"

9 x 12"

oil on masonite

sold

I did this painting yesterday - a friend saw it on my easel and bought it. Not the most usual occurence in my life, but a welcome offer. Painting for shows means weeks of hard work and little income, hoping it'll all come around in the end.

A note to art lovers - if you use Netflix, they have a great collection of artists' biographies. I find them so inspiring.

Happy Sunday and....... if anyone out there wants to send me some photos of the snowstorms, I'd absolutely love it as a subject to paint.

This is my newest painting, done for the July show in Asheville - I really, really love it. A young woman shares the room with Picasso's "Nude Under a Pine Tree", in the Art Institute of Chicago.

"Bent Out of Shape"

6 x 6"

oil on masonite

Picking up where I left off - I spent the next three or so hours in the Legion of Honor Museum, a somewhat small collection, but so worth it. This gentleman was admiring a modern sculpture, I wish I knew the artist but all I know is the Picasso in the background. I enjoy these figurative paintings both for the art and I get to play with the texture and folds and colors of clothing on a person. I'm always interested in getting that weight of the coat or flow of the skirt. I also like the relationship of the man with the bent and rigid form of the sculpture.
