After I got about 3/4 done on this painting, I turned off the reference photo and proceeded - something I frequently do when I'm at a point of boredom. It's a good habit - I do think it improves your intuition.

Do you wonder about that much while you're painting them?
Honestly, I see them as objects. But... I am interested in how the use of certain colors or different techniques can influence the interpretation of that person. If that makes sense.
As a fairly recent representational painter, I thought it heresy to proceed without a reference! I take down the setup towards the end because I have such a "literal" bent, I forget I'm making a painting. Thanks so much for your commentary. Terrific painting!
When you said you turned off the photo you caught my attention. I often paint from my digital photo on a monitor screen. It seems the luminous quality of the screen represents the image better than a printed photo. Do you do this?
On another note..
The intuitive stuff is what I love about painting.Takes it from copying to art.
