"Lancaster County"

5 x 7"
oil on masonite
sold

One of my favorite paintings of the week - done fast and with a flat, honker brush and a wide range of color - letting the orange ground peek through a bit more. When I need some inspiration, I look at other painters' works - with landscapes, I pour over Doug Braithwaite's to remind myself that you don't have to nitpick to get the point across.

  4. I like your comparison with artists and chefs. I think artists of all genres are influenced by what sells or by what people like. Its hard not to be. The difficulty is in breaking away from that trend (sometimes) and doing what you WANT to do...to do some experimenting, and be prepared to fail. I like how you are showing us your experiments with new colors, brush work, and subject. I drool over Braithwhite's work as well. He does say a lot without resorting to fussiness of detail or overworking areas. I enjoy oils worked "alla prima", animated brushwork, and saying more with less. A goal I struggle with daily. I am enjoying your work with the orange ground.

  9. This is beautiful-reminds me one of Jane Wilson's. The liquid paint and colors. The format is small but space big. Wish I had painted it.

  10. Unbelievable, now if it's not warm enough for me to go outside tomorrow, I suggest no one talk to me - I love your outdoor paintings and just when I thought I might never go outside again (a long fall of being attacked by wind propelled panels) I might just be inspired.

  16. I absolutely love this and would love to paint with this style one day. Would you please explain what a honker brush is?

  17. Honker is HUGE. A big, fat, flat brush is my jam.
