U is for Umber. Inspired by an exercise that Carol Marine presented at our recent workshop - purely a values study. And it's hard. So I did this piece strictly with Burnt Umber - but with a tad of black and a tad of white - I wanted that sweatshirt to separate itself from the overall tones. I just loved painting this. I almost hate to part with it.
Very nice! I like the choice of using a little more than one color, it does separate the sweatshirt.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for 'Y'. :-0
Wow. This is fantastic. More interesting than the pepper and cup I did. :) Looking forward to the "Y" also. :O
ReplyDeleteFantastic! I think you were looser in your brushwork than you usually are. A very nice painting!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Karin, this painting immediately reminded me of Seurat's charcoal drawings. If you aren't familiar with them do check them out. It is amazing what can be created with just one color and a few tints and shades.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work! I've left a longer comment under "Tree". Wasn't sure you would see it there.
ReplyDeleteI''m a big fan.
Another luscious piece. Your blog has become one of my favorites to check every day.
ReplyDeleteNice composition, too. You really stretched outside your comfort zone, and very successfully too. Did you use a black canvas? If so, try using a white canvas, if you ever use umber again, then you can get all the way to white using only paint thinner or turp. Lotta fun. Ann
ReplyDeleteProves that you don't need full color to make a statement. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI found your blog several months ago and it is now among my favorites. The color choice and the boy's posture tell such a story in this painting. I am really enjoying your alphabet series. I will be sad when you get to Z, unless you feel like going back to the beginning and starting again? :)
