I'm happy to have squeezed in a small, daily painting tonight- I've been working on pieces for a show in July and it's all-consuming, to say the least.
This woman was enjoying some "me-time" on a Saturday morning on Oak Street Beach, in Chicago. I thought of doing a larger painting of her - so I've tried it out in this smaller format to get an idea of its impact. I'd love some feedback when you've got the time.

ReplyDeleteNice piece. The figure has a nice relaxed feel and I like that she is solo in her space like some of your recent paintings. One comment that it is difficult to separate what is in front of her from her folded leg. I am assuming there is something on the sand in front of
her left leg?

ReplyDeleteI love her posture and the idea, but I would be oh so tempted to add a lot more space around her, to show how empty the beach is. You know, ala Christina's World.
ReplyDeletemona - there is a big, floppy bag in front of her leg. and maggie - i love that idea of more space and emptiness around her. if i did do a larger version, there would certainly be more of that. great suggestion.

ReplyDeletejust arriving here for the first time....I LOVE your content....the images of people are wonderful, the lines, the waiting, the just sitting alone. color and brushwork are lovely as well.
i've often had the image of people at the bustop, i'm fascinated with it. so when i came across this i felt a kindred heart.
wonderful work. i am trying to get back into my painting after a long 4 years raising my two little ones.

Karin, my thoughts are to (1) bring some of the blue of the sea into her pants or bag, and (2) do as maggie suggested and make the figure much smaller in a vast space. Also be careful on how you paint the sand, because although I know it's very painterly and totally your style, the brushstrokes make the sand feel very 2 dimensional and unresolved. This is nit pickin' of course, your work is fantastic; always a great use of color, design, and value contrast. Can't wait to see a bigger version of this one!

My initial thought was "it needs a little more ocean showing" but I really quite like it as it is.

ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of your work. I agree with Cat that a bit more color in the clothes may be good. She suggests more ocean blue. With your great color sense, I'd just see what you'd choose. I've lived at the beach all my life. I think your treatment of the sand is great! The colors and brushwork are very painterly and interesting. I can feel her enjoying it's softness as she relaxes on it... Nice work.

Just looking at this gave me the same feeling I get whenever I get to the beach. I just relax. I find it really interesting that she is facing away from the water. I agree with more water and more space. I really love everything you do. Monica
ReplyDeleteKarin - your work mesmerizes me. I live at the beach...and my only suggestion...well, more of a question...where are her footprints in the sand?
