"Under One's Hat"

8 x 10"
oil on panel
sold

You may remember a small study I painted of this young woman.  As a larger piece, I zoomed in on the fabulous 'Portrait of a Lady' by Frans Pourbus the Younger because I l-u-r-v-e this painting and I preferred the woman's back side that shows more of her feminine sweater and skirt - a contrast to the sternly dressed woman in the painting she's viewing.

"Color Guard"

5 x 12"
oil on panel
sold

This new painting is included in my upcoming show Museum Hours - a security guard studying Asher Durand's landscape 'Dover Plains, Dutchess County, New York' in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.  I always mention this, if you're touring Washington, DC, you must go a few blocks away from the 'Mall' area (National Gallery of Art, Space Museum, etc.) and browse this fabulous museum as well as the National Portrait Museum.

And for a suggestion of GoodTV - stream in the Australian (original version) of The Slap.  It's grittier and more interesting than the American version running on NBC.

"Bench Test"

5 x 7"
oil on panel
sold

In the Art Institute of Chicago, in the New Modern Wing, visitors sit on long benches against a white wall.  I've said this before, it's one of my favorite spots to people watch.  Figures become forms against the stark background - I just love that.

"Piracy"

9 x 12"
oil on panel
sold

A new painting, done from a visit to the Delaware Art Museum several years ago.  I was in the area to explore Chadd's Ford, the Wyeth's hometown and a place that my mom favored for inspiration when we lived in Bucks County years ago.

Seeing N.C. Wyeth's and Howard Pyle's paintings as a young girl was the beginning of my desire to be an illustrator when I grew up.  And there they were, in the Delaware Art Museum, ready to inspire me again next to a woman, with her commanding figure, enjoying Howard Pyle's 'The Flying Dutchman' on the left and 'The Buccaneer Was a Picturesque Fellow' to her right.

"Form and Function"

10 x 10"
oil on panel
sold

A new painting included in the grouping Museum Hours - one of my personal favorites - a woman standing before Robert Motherwell's 'Elegy to the Spanish Republic, 54", in the Museum of Modern Art, New York City.

I admit, I sway more towards representational art but any time I approach an abstract painting by Motherwell, Franz Kline, Robert Diebenkorn or Mark Rothko, to name a few - I stop and stare for a good while.  With Motherwell and Kline, it's the largeness, the stark forms of black and white maybe that grabs my attention.  I don't strive to 'understand' it, I just enjoy it.

"Bored Certified"

8 x 10"
oil on panel
sold

As you may know, I will have a small solo show titled 'Museum Hours', opening February 28th at the Anne Irwin Fine Art Gallery here in Atlanta.  I got the okay to begin revealing the paintings, starting with this new piece, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York City - a mother viewing Pablo Picasso's 'Girl Before a Mirror' while her seemingly bored daughter sits beside her.

"Back Support"

6 x 8"
oil on panel
sold

I'm on my 10th painting for a grouping in a small solo show opening at the end of February - with the same young woman and the same Flemish painting you see on the post below.  The last piece I finished took d-a-y-s.  It includes one of the most fabulous paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but it was a doozie.

I took a break today and loosened up with a new study of this young man resting his back next to a Monet in the French Impressionism gallery in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.

"White Collar"

6 x 8"
oil on panel
sold

I want to paint a larger, more-realized version of this young woman 1) because the painting behind her is one of my very favorites in the Legion of Honor Museum 2) I love her floppy hat and 3) I love the combination of browns and blacks and creams with that touch of olive.  What I wasn't sure of was how the coffee colored wall would do with the skin tones and I wasn't sure I could pull off that cool shirt and whether or not to make it more solid.  So I did this study today.

"200 Faces, No. 146"

4 x 4"
oil on panel
sold

I took a break today from the February show paintings - making great progress.  Largely in part to binge-watching Breaking Bad while painting, which kept me seated all day long.  Great ending by the way.

This new addition to my ongoing series BUST-ED shows one of my visual obsessions - a face emerging from the dark.

"First Class Male"

6 x 6"
oil on panel
sold

First, I am hard at work with the paints.  Binge-painting while binge-watching Breaking Bad.  I know I'm late to the party but the show finally clicked with me.   It's most excellent.

I'm working on a grouping of 10, for a small solo show opening late February.  You'll see the paintings sometime close to the opening, which drives me nuts, but that's the deal.

Meanwhile, this new piece features one of my personal favorite paintings by Matisse, the 'Male Nude', which hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Happy New Year to You

I like this quote.

"An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in.  A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves."  ~ Bill Vaughan

If that doesn't inspire, there are the wise words from Bob Marley...

"Don't worry about a thing, 'cause every little thing gonna be all right."

I wish you a very happy, healthy and creative 2015 and thank you for your support and friendship.

Cheers  ~  Karin J

I've had a frustrating painting week with a couple of wipe-offs.  Rusty I guess.  Too tight.  And the way to climb out of that is to paint a mugshot.  It's been a while, I don't know why, it's one of my favorite subjects and I'm so, so happy with this new addition to my ongoing series BUST-ED.
